Evolution education in light of religious science teachers’ and scientists’ conceptions of evolution and religion

Abstract Background The presumed conflict between religion and evolution is considered one of the main causes rejection worldwide. However, there a unique group religious people who accept, study, teach evolution. aim this study was to gain better understanding these individuals’ conception relationship religion, factors that influenced conception. Religious biology teachers (n = 10) scientists were surveyed interviewed about their it. Results population demonstrated reconciling science possible for them. interpretation bible as moral guidance, not book, found be idea in participants’ Most participants said by parents’ teachers’ approach science. Participants had rejected past emphasized exposure scientific knowledge alone enough counter rejection, whereas compatibility promoted acceptance. Conclusions These findings suggest importance exposing different approaches religion. Implementation conclusions professional development programs may help promote religiously affiliated students’ learning meaningful general.
